Free Tax Return Preparation for You by Volunteers
The VITA Program offers free tax help to people who make $50,000 or less and need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation to qualified individuals in local communities. These volunteers can inform taxpayers about special tax credits for which they may qualify such as Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly or the Disabled.
Consider Volunteering With the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program
As a volunteer, you’ll provide tax preparation service to taxpayers who do not have the ability to prepare their own tax returns. Don’t know that much about taxes? Don’t worry — you’ll receive specialized training from a certified VITA volunteer or from IRS employees. Some of the volunteer opportunities include being a greeter, a reviewer, a tax preparer and more. The hours are flexible, the free training is easy and the time commitment is minimal.
Taxpayers rely on VITA volunteers to provide free quality tax return preparation and assistance yearly. Last year, more than 87,000 volunteers at thousands of sites across the nation (including at the United Way offices in Valparaiso) helped more than 3 million taxpayers with free tax preparation. Volunteering can be an exciting, educational and enjoyable experience. Think about becoming a volunteer and see what a difference it makes in your life as well as others. You can apply now for the program by downloading and filling out the Volunteer Application. It is a write-in PDF that can be emailed to George Kuebler, VITA Facilitator for Porter County, at george@unitedwaypc.org. For more information, email or call George at 219-464-3583 x128.
